Shake the Scene: The Return of the Living Dead

The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Return of the Living Dead posterThe Scene: “You mean the movie lied??!”

Why I Love This Scene: As our eagle-eyed and giraffe-tongued readers know, The Return of the Living Dead is my favorite movie of all time. One of my favorite things about it is how it wasn’t like any other zombie movie before it. It had fast-moving, talking zombies that couldn’t be killed by traditional zombie-killing means, such as destroying the brain. As Freddy, Frank and Burt find out in their first encounter with a zombie, destroying the brain doesn’t do jack squat. This scene marries hilarious slapstick and dialogue with dismemberment beautifully and sets the tone for everything else in the movie, and the frantic acting by everybody is spot on.

Quiz: Do you know why the zombie runs past Freddy and Frank?
