Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion (1997)
I haven’t seen this dopey-blonde comedy since 1997 but truth be told I remember liking it quite a lot. That mindset may change it I saw it now but perhaps not after watching this clip of their very odd interpretive dance for Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” I heard that song on the radio just this very morning and of course this movie is the first thing I think of. Anyway, can’t go wrong with Cyndi Lauper, right?
Whatever happened to Mira Sorvino anyway? I really thought she’d have a more successful and talented career. She won an oscar for Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite and now she’s making DTV features and guest-spotting on various TV shows. What gives? I like her a lot and wish she’d be a part of better more talented stuff. Kudrow was my favorite female “Friend” and I’m glad she’s having a great career post-Friends.
The standout in the film though is the delightfully funny Janeane Garofalo. Rewatching her clips from this film are tickling my funny bone. If you haven’t seen this very decent comedy, I’d recommend it. I should also mention that it’s R-rated so it’s not so watered down for teen audiences. Just look at the poster—can’t go wrong with a great set of gams!
This dance scene is just so weird. I’m not sure if it’s funny because the interpretative dance is so silly and dumb or if it’s funny because it came out of the blue and was never rehearsed, especially with Alan Cumming anyway. They all know and flow into the routine like they absolutely know what they’re doing. All while their alumni classmates watch in awe and applaud them for such a wacky stunt. I also like how Cumming is wearing sneakers. (looking at the wikipedia page I rediscovered he became rich when he invented a special sneaker sole. Before I read that I found it extra funny that he came in sneakers like he only went there for the interpretative dance with the girls because if memory serves he arrives on a helicopter late to the reunion, does the dance and then just leaves which is hysterical.)
I still love this movie. And Mira Sorvino now does Hallmark Christmas movies. So sad!

Of all the 80’s reunion movies I liked this one most of all. Hopefully Miss Sorvino will get a comeback soon.

Yes! I know I shouldn’t love this film but I just do! I saw it at the cinema when I was about 15 or 16, I think, and I’ve always really liked it.
