Man of Steel Review

Brad: Another aspect I didn’t much care for was that Superman had trouble breathing when he got on Zod’s ship even though he can breathe in the vacuum of space.

Brian: You know, I didn’t even think of that, but you’re 100% right. Outer space and underwater and inside a raging inferno are no big deal, but Krypton’s atmosphere messes him up. Even though he was born there.

Brad: Jor-El wasn’t that bright either. He knows the planet is doomed and his elders are idiots (they did consciously stop colonization and instead waste away their own planet) yet he thinks that because he has a natural-born baby that they will listen and see this as a good thing. So putting the codec into his son was his grand idea of salvation. Well wouldn’t simply putting the skull codec into a new planet work too? Am I missing something here to Jor-El’s plan?

Speaking of plans, a good compromise would’ve been if Superman said to Zod: Hey, let’s leave this planet alone, we can go over to Mars and make a new Krypton there. Win-win.

“And if you could kneel, that would be totally cool.”

Another good point was the female Kryptonian baddie said something else like they don’t have a sense of morality like Superman does. Was she referring to all Kryptonians or just Zod’s army? Because if she was referring to all Kryptonians then how did Jor-El get his good morals?

Brian: She was referring to people who don’t follow the teachings of Christ.

Brad: I initially thought the black skull which was the codex was actually a human skull and that we are somewhat related to Kryptonians. I would’ve bought that. After all they look just like caucasians. It would also explain how Jor-El knows Earth and why he sends his son there. And what was the deal with the ship that was in Canada for 20,000 years? Did a Kryptonian travel to Earth before? Why?

Brian: The whole codex thing wasn’t even necessary. Why not just shoot Kal-El off to Earth, then Zod and crew bust out of the phantom zone and start some shit and Superman has to stop them? Oh wait, that was Superman II.

They explained the old ship in the metal history lesson. The Kryptonians were going around on scouting missions for centuries.

Brad: So the Kryptonians actually have Earth experience and if one of them made the trip he/she would’ve seen humans since Lois said it was there 18,000 years ago. So maybe I’m on to something about the skull being a Neanderthal skull or something. And will a sequel find the lost Kryptonian frozen in the ice. Oh dear lord I hope it’s Supergirl.

Brian: Something about that 18,000 years thing: I guess Kryptonian technology never evolved in all that time? They were still using the same robots and metal videos on modern-day Krypton.

Another bug up my tuchus: Zod and company woke up from the Phantom Zone right as Krypton was destroyed, then spent 33 years looking for Superman, so they’re all like in their 60s?

Brad: Maybe Kryptonians don’t age as quick as humans. Plus Zod did have that gray goatee so maybe he was 60-ish.

Eligible for AARP?

Eligible for AARP?

Brian: Seems like Clark was aging right on schedule. Maybe they age slower in their atmosphere. Zod’s broad definitely didn’t look retirement age.

Brad: I watched Red Letter Media’s Half in the Bag last night and they discussed Man of Steel (long story short: they hated it) but the most amusing thing they said was that this was the best Incredible Hulk movie ever. The sheer destruction without a care to who lived through it or not was a Hulk mentality and he even acted like Bruce Banner traveling around hiding his “secret power.”

Brian: That’s a good point, it’s kind of like the end of The Incredible Hulk really stretched out. They should’ve thrown in the piano TV Hulk theme when he was hitchhiking.

Brad: The kiss between Lois and Superman was so shoe-horned and out of place my eyes are still not working right from how hard I rolled them. Metropolis is in utter ruin with hundreds or thousands of deaths and Lois is compelled to kiss him then? Plus it’s just out of nowhere, what did they have like 10 minutes of screen time together? Ech.

Brian: That was pretty pointless and unnecessary. He probably should’ve flown around looking for survivors in the rubble.

What did you actually like about the picture?

  1. Great review guys. Oh and I made it to the last page and missing poop inside spacepod is a disturbing mystery.
still haven’t seen it, but from reading your post I can see that the movie suffers from everything I thought it would.

  2. One page is enough. Based off page 1, I’ll assume you guys were lukewarm, at best, to this movie. I pretty much agree. It was a decent movie, but the more I think about it, not a decent Superman movie.

“But did you want a slow movie? Did you want ANOTHER full-on Superman origin story?” This was my reaction, too!

  3. I think this needed to be a full on origin or stay away from that entirely. As it was, it was a mash up and spread itself too thinly. Also, I get the whole hate about everything being destroyed and him making questionable decision but he’d only just become Superman by that point. Maybe he’d not really developed his proper moral compass by that point. Or maybe it was just dodgy writing!

  4. I lost my shit when Pa Kent died the tornado. What the hell!?!? You’re going to DIE and make a widow out of your wife, leaving her the burden of running the Kent farm all on her own, because you want to prove a point to Clark? What the eff is wrong with you man! Your friggen son is Superman, just let him save you!! Someone should have spoken up about this in editing. “Do we really need to have him die?” “Oh, good point, that does seem extreme and stupid, we’ll cut that scene altogether, for brevity and common sense.”

  5. Well – it took me almost nineteen hours to read this entire thing but I did – good job boys!

P.S. I’d go back to save my dog too.

  6. Nice review! I enjoyed it quite a bit actually. One thing I hope they work on in the sequel is Lane’s and Clark’s relationship. Adams described their dynamic as “a strong friendship”, which I agree with. I never really saw a romantic connection between the two, which isn’t a bad thing at all, I found their friendship really sweet and charming, so when the actual romantic interaction between the two happened, it caught me a little off guard. Perhaps that’s all down to the messy script.
