Parental Guidance Suggestion: Tangled

If you have a kid, you’re going to have to sit through a lot of crappy movies with them. This is a column from a dad’s perspective on whether you’ll be able to stand watching a movie without fashioning a noose or not, and if your child will try to stab you after it’s over.

Tangled

Tangled (2010)

Synopsis: Rapunzel, a girl with extremely long hair that has magic healing powers, is held captive by an evil witch who kidnapped her when she was a baby and raised her to believe she was her mother. One day charming bandit Flynn Rider stumbles upon her tower and the two go on an adventure of discovery and hair jokes.

Would you be able to sit through it?: Absolutely! Although it’s a princess movie it’s really an adventure movie starring a princess, and it’s actually pretty good. It’s a fun watch that isn’t overly cutesy or powdery feminine. There are songs, but they’re good, not annoying.

Any scary/violent parts?: Rapunzel’s kidnaptive mother, Goethel, is a real witch in every sense of the word, and gets very aggressive and stabby at the end.

Anything that will screw up your kid’s head?: Rapunzel discovering that Goethel isn’t her real mother and turning on her may cause your own child to do the same.

Any lessons to be learned?: Don’t be afraid to explore new and different things.

Recommended age: 3. There are a couple of fight scenes and a death, but nothing too out of hand. The spunky princess with the long pretty hair will appeal to girls and the dashing rogue will appeal to boys, while the animal sidekicks will appeal to both.

Rent it, buy it or avoid it?: Pretty solid buy. Your kid will want to watch it over and over, and it won’t drive you nuts.

  1. MTV is making a version for the urban crowd like they did with their “Hip Hopera: Carmen.” They’ll be calling it “Yo MTV RAP!unzel”
