Movies That Made the Room Dusty

Listen, I’m ALL MAN, OK??! But I also have a heart, somewhere down there, by my kidneys, I think, and sometimes a scene in a movie will send out waves of dust through the TV that somehow attaches itself to the literal strings of my heart and tugs so hard that it pumps a mysterious solution that bursts its way up to my throat and eye sockets (note: I am not a doctor). The following is a list of movies that caused that reaction the most, and the key scene responsible, listed in ascending order of how much dust it produced:

*spoilers throughout*

10. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Cue the dust: When Spock’s torpedo coffin is being loaded and Scotty plays “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes, which just makes it sound incredibly sad. Although, this is followed up by the confusion of how the torpedo coffin was shot from space at an incredibly high velocity and managed a nice soft landing on the planet, undamaged.

9. Million Dollar Baby

Cue the dust: When Clint Eastwood has to kill the girl who he has basically come to view as his daughter. And I watched this before I had a daughter of my own, so I’m sure it would affect me much more deeply now. But why would I want that?

8. The Iron Giant

Cue the dust: When the Giant is flying toward the rocket to be a hero in the eyes of the little boy who befriended him, he closes his eyes and says, “Superman…” That scene pushes an already good movie into greatness and makes you believe that a cartoon can make you cry (although the “goodbye” part is more than a little similar to #6 on this list…).

7. Saving Private Ryan

Cue the dust: When Captain Miller dies, and we morph from young to old Ryan, who practically begs his family to tell him that the life he has lived was worth Miller’s life. Hits you even harder if your grandpa was a WWII vet. And even harder than that if he was saved by Tom Hanks.

6. E.T.

Cue the dust: When E.T. says goodbye to Elliott and his family, especially when E.T. points to his heart and says, “Ouch,” and when he tells Gertie to “Beeee gooood.” As a result, I’ve been good since 1982.

5. King Kong Lives

Cue the dust: Yes, I said King Kong Lives. I haven’t seen this movie in about 25 years, but I distinctly remember crying when King Kong dies at the end with his mate and son by his side, and his son shown afterwards. I like monkeys. Leave me alone.

4. Toy Story 3

Cue the dust: When Andy hands over Woody to Bonnie, having to say goodbye forever to something he’s loved all his life and remembering just how much that little stuffed cowboy toy meant to him. Never mind the fact that an 18-year-old man still has a toy chest in his room.

3. Brian’s Song

Cue the dust: When Gale Sayers is giving his award speech, especially when he tells everyone, “I love Brian Piccolo.” It’s just way too much to handle, especially as a Chicago Bears fan.

2. The Green Mile

Cue the dust: When John Coffey is sitting in the electric chair, singing “Heaven, I’m in heaven” in that little kid intonation of his as he’s crying, and all the guards are crying, and some people in the room who came there just to see him die are crying, and some people who aren’t even there are crying, and some cows out in a field by the prison are crying, etc.

1. Up

Cue the dust: When we’re taken through Carl and Ellie’s life together in just over 4 minutes, ending with Carl sitting alone at Ellie’s funeral with a single balloon in his hand. Even though this scene is in a cartoon with a flying house and a talking dog, it’s more touching than any live-action drama with real actors that I’ve ever seen. Everything about it is perfect and heartbreaking, and Michael Giacchino’s excellent music enhances it even more. If you have someone you love in your life and this scene doesn’t make you well up even just a little, then welcome to Earth, space rock.

  1. Dude – this is an awesome awesome post. I always like to blame my eye allergies when things get dusty out there. Like the other day when I was watching The Grapes of Wrath and that scene where Tom Joad leaves his mom. My allergies got really bad. My personal ranking of high allergy days would be that opening montage in Up and then when Spock actually dies. One time my wife and I went to buy a new TV and they were broadcasting Up on the show room floor and my allergies got so bad in the middle of Best Buy I had to go to the bathroom for a few minutes. I can not fathom life without my wife. Great – where’s those eye drops…

  2. How about the scene in The Neverending Story when Atreyu watches his horse die right in front of him. I think I welled up more at that scene than the Challenger accident.
