There are some things you see as a kid that become a skewed fact that actually turns out not to be true at all, like your dad is the tallest guy in the world or your step-uncle is a fantastic kisser. This also applies to movies, where some detail sticks out for you and you turn it into a false assumption.
Ghostbusters (1984)
I’m willing to bet most kids of our age-group were all confused as to why a beautiful female ghost was unbuckling and unzipping Ray Stanz’ (Dan Aykroyd) fly in the montage in the middle of the film. I always thought it was a harmless spectral prank since after Ray’s orgasm face the other Ghostbusters unexplainably fall off their beds. Plus the scene was a dream since the shot transitioned into the wavy-dream transition confusing me even more as to why Ray would dream of making love to a ghost. I barely knew about the birds and bees back in 1984 and I especially knew less about the birds putting the bees in their mouths. I learned later on in the DVD release that that scene was cut for ratings purposes and was supposed to be more graphic and lewd. I may have also been confused due to the fact that when they meet a normal looking lady ghost in the library in the beginning she eventually became ghastly when provoked. So I have been conditioned (mainly by movies) at a young age that all ghosts are harmful and horrific even if they seem nice, beautiful or sexy. See also Raiders of the Lost Ark for another example of beautiful ghosts turning nasty. However, with the poorly edited BJ scene in Ghostbusters they probably should’ve cut the whole scene but that probably would’ve ruined the pacing of the song played in the montage.

Ray had to explain to the other ‘Busters why he had Ecto-plasm stains all over his pants in the morning.
Also the line by Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) “I’ve seen shit that would turn YOU white!” always confused me because he said it to the mayor, who was already a white man. Even then I guess I got some racial humor because that’s what I thought the line was about.

Maybe this ties in with Ron Jeremy’s cameo in the movie.

Yeah, I see this a lot, too! There are some older ‘family’ movies with parts that I see now and say. “Oh… I can’t believe that’s in a family movie”. I guess it’s a way of getting all age groups to be entertained by a film. I remember when I was a kid, I got to an age where the adults in the room would turn and smile to each other at certain parts of movies and I didn’t know what they were smiling about, but I knew it had to be something.

I haven’t seen the film in so long, I’d forgotten about that scene. I wonder what it would have been like without the cut. The innocence of children, eh?
