True or False Trivia: Big Trouble in Little China

TOFT

One of the fascinating pieces of trivia below is true*, the other is false. Do YOU know which is which?

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

1) As Lightning (the character, one of the Three Storms) is crushed to death near the end of the film, some of the lightning he emits forms a small Chinese symbol as it disappears (near the top middle of the screen). The symbol translates as “carpenter”. This film was directed by John Carpenter.

2) John Carpenter and Kurt Russell came up with the initial concept of the film in 1981 while visiting China researching and contracting various infectious Chinese diseases for The Thing. While both men were taking a drunken, gelatinous piss on the walls of the Forbidden City, Carpenter slurred,”We’re making a little trouble here,” to which Russell replied, “Ah, yes, but China is big!” in the most unbelievably racist Chinese voice anyone has ever heard. The two men were promptly beaten and arrested. They would then spend the next four months being tortured around the clock by Chinese truck drivers who would electrocute their testicles to the point of absurdity. They also had their penises flayed, and Russell would later use the only line their torturer ever spoke in English for the movie Tombstone: “Skin that smokewagon and see what happens.” The pair was eventually released in exchange for the rights to the Halloween franchise, and Russell and Carpenter would go on to make their picture, changing the name to Big Trouble in Little China based on their experience, which they would come to cherish as it brought them closer together. Unfortunately, their smokewagons would never recover.
