True or False Trivia: The Birdcage

TOFT

One of the fascinating pieces of trivia below is true*, the other is false. Do YOU know which is which?

The Birdcage (1996)

1) Steve Martin was originally cast as Armand Goldman and Robin Williams was to play Albert Goldman but scheduling conflicts caused Martin to drop out of the role and Williams then decided to assume the role of Armand instead.

Steve Martin King Tut

2) Nathan Lane wasn’t the only star of the movie to cross-dress as a woman. Unbeknownst to most viewers, “Calista Flockhart” doesn’t actually exist, but was played by Prince Rahomeses II, an ancient mummy. Before filming began, actress Dianne Wiest was in Egypt to buy high-grade opium and ended up urinating and vomiting on top of the undiscovered tomb of Prince Rahomeses II, who was summoned back to life via the joining of a thousand scarab beetles, as prophecy foretold. In exchange for sparing her life, Wiest offered Rahomeses her virginity and a role in The Birdcage, which Rahomeses eagerly accepted. Producers initially weren’t keen on the idea of an undead Egyptian mummy held together by beetles playing the role of Barbara, but their minds were changed when Dan Futterman, who played Barbara’s fiancé Val, fell instantly in love with the 3,000-year-old prince. Rahomeses was a natural in the role, and went on to achieve success as the star of Ally McBeal until semi-retiring when he fell in love with his soul mate and the only person drier than his millennia-old self: Harrison Ford.
