Captain Phillips (2013)

Captain-Phillapes

Starring: Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Max Martini

Directed by: Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy; The Bourne Ultimatum; United 93)

Synopsis:  A cargo ship gets hijacked by Somali men who only know American culture through Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Best part: The sniper scene. A lot of tension built up, and palpable relief when it’s over. Very well done. (obvious spoiler if you don’t know what happened):

Worst part(s): I’m very prone to seasickness, and Paul Greengrass is obsessed with shakycam, so I puked 17 times while watching this movie.

Best line: Muse: “Last year I took a Greek ship. All the yogurt I could handle!”

Nudity: A shirtless Tom Hanks.

Overall: A very well-made nailbiter that does a great job of making you feel uncomfortable and sweaty. Tom Hanks is really great, as always (although he’s using pretty much the exact same accent he did in Catch Me If You Can), and first-time actor Barkhad Abdi is barking up the right tree with his acting career (get that bump on your head looked at, though)! But while it’s a great hostage crisis movie, the legitimacy of its accuracy has come into question, with the crew of the Alabama (how weird is it that that’s the name of the ship and the guy who played Forrest Gump is the captain?) stating that Captain Phillips didn’t seem to give much of a crap about their safety, didn’t act like a hero at all, was actually reckless in taking a route that brought the ship closer to pirate territory so he could save time, and some have even gone so far as to say he had some kind of twisted fantasy of being taken hostage. Regardless of how honest the movie is about what happened, it’s still a solid watch that will have you on the edge of your lifeboat seat, puking your guts out.

Score: 8 anti-pirate fire hoses (out of 10)
