Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
Starring: Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, most of the people from The State
Synopsis: A spoof of early ’80s summer camp romps.
Best part(s): Pretty much anything Paul Rudd’s asshole character says or does:
Worst part(s): I just can’t get behind Janeane Garofalo as the star of a motion picture.
Best line(s):
Gary: McKinley needs to experience “The Ultimate”!
J.J.: You mean, penis-in-vagina?
Gary: No, dickhead – sex.
Nudity: For the very first time in a movie about summer camp: none!
Overall: Very fun and funny flick which straddles the fine line between stupid and clever really well, brought to you by some of the same guys who brought to you The State (a ’90s sketch show on MTV that had about a 65-35 hit-to-miss funny ratio). While I can take or leave Janeane Garofalo, the cast is loaded with future stars like Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks and Joseph Kariuki. It won’t be everyone’s can of mixed vegetables, but if this kind of humor itches your poison ivy bone like it does mine I happily recommend it.
Score: 7 Skylabs (out of 10)
Best closing sentence of March!

Paul Rudd is funny. Janeane Garofalo is not funny. The end.

Fortunately for every unfunny person (Janeane Garofalo, Molly Shannon) there’s 1.5 funny people (Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Timothy Gasiewski).

I didn’t like this when it first came out but I get the feeling if I watched it now, I’d love it.
